Spill Kits
Regulations
Currently, there are no written legal requirements governing the size of spill kit you have to have for a given scenario. We know that this is not very helpful if you do not have a lot of expertise in this area. If you have been asked to 'Get a spill kit for that.' or 'The audit says that we need a spill kit.' Where do you start? We have compiled a help sheet called 'How do I choose Spill Kits' which will hopefully give you some useful guidance.Spill Type
There are three types of spill kit available, the chemical spill kit, the oil & fuel spill kit and the general purpose & EVO spill kit (sometimes known as the maintenance spill kit). Each spill kit has the ability to absorb different liquid types, but can broadly be broken down as follows:-General Purpose & EVO spill kits are suitable for solvents, oil & fuels, non-corrosive liquids, common fluids and water based fluids.
Oil & Fuel spill kits are suitable for solvents, oil & fuels and some common fluids (will repel water based fluids).
Chemical spill kits are suitable for chemicals, hazardous liquids, solvents, oil & fuels, common fluids and water based fluids.
A more comprehensive list can be seen by viewing our Selection Guide.
Size
The current range of spill kits on offer from Spillshop have absorbent capacities ranging from 15 Litres right up to 1100 Litres. All of our spill kits state the absorbent capacity. This is what the contents of a kit can physically absorb. In the past, some unscrupulous companies have stated the capacity of the container that the kit comes supplied in and not the absorbent capacity of the contents. It is not a lot of use having a 240 Litre capacity wheeled bin with the kit inside only being able to absorb 100 Litres of liquid! Risk assessment and common sense will allow you to select the correct capacity of kit that you should choose.Packaging
Spill kits available from Spillshop come packaged in a variety of formats. The smaller sizes come with carry handles and shoulder straps through to bins with lids, all being portable by hand. The mid-range and larger kits come supplied in wheeled bins, static lockers and wheeled trunkers, again portable by hand or by forklift. All kits supplied come clearly labelled with the spill type to avoid confusion.Contents
The contents of a spill kit will vary depending on the size of the kit. In general, all will contain absorbent pads, absorbent socks, disposal bags & ties and a contents & instruction sheet. Furthermore, the contents of some spill kits may contain drip trays, absorbent rolls, absorbent cushions, drain protection in the form of drain seals, plugging granules to repair holes and splits in drums or tanks and barrier tape.Usage
All spill kits are designed to be suitable for use both indoors and outdoors. Some of the larger kits come supplied in weatherproof containers suitable for outside storage.Refills
At Spillshop we think that it is unfair that once you have used a spill kit that you should have to replace it with a complete new kit. This is why we offer spill kit refills. Just simply purchase a refill kit and put the contents back into the original packaging. In many cases the outer packaging can cost more than the contents that it holds, so by purchasing refills you can save your business money.Cart
