IBC Bunds

IBC bunds, also known as IBC spill pallets, have risen in popularity in the last 20 years for their ability to capture a minimum of 1100L of liquid in the event of an IBC failure, doing so while complying with all liquid  storage regulations. If you have an IBC on site that contains anything other than water, it must either sit in a bunded area or be sited on a bund. Fines for non-compliance vastly exceed the cost of purchasing an IBC spill pallet, so there’s all the more reason to stock up well. All IBC bunds from SpillShop are manufactured in the UK.

Single IBC Bunds

The IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) has seen a rapid rise in popularity over the years. Where once small to medium-sized businesses used to take delivery of their liquids in 205L drums, this has largely been replaced by the more robust IBC where applicable. Faster handling at the delivery and return stage and less time spent decanting have added to the rise in usage. At the same time as this emerging popularity, the current rules were put into place, which you can read an abbreviated overview of with our Storage Regulations guide. All IBCs must be stored on a bund pallet with a minimum capacity of 1100L. Made from Polyethylene, they are strong, durable and compatible with a broad range of chemicals, and SpillShop have a variety of compliant single IBC bunds manufactured to meet these regulations.

Double IBC

Double IBC bunds for storing two IBCs are permitted when either the two different liquids stored will not react and/or where the two IBCs are not linked together. Here, the regulations state that the IBC spill pallet must have a bund capacity of 25% of the total capacity stored in it, or 110% of the largest vessel. Every IBC spill pallet supplied by SpillShop will come with the option of either an attached cover or additional rain cover, depending on where your IBC and bunds are sited. If sited indoors or undercover, you do not have to consider them. If, however, your IBC Bunds are outdoors without cover, you have to protect the bund from the ingress of rainwater. This is achieved by purchasing the bund with an attached cover or by purchasing a separate rain cover.

IBC Overflow Trays

Almost all SpillShop IBC spill pallets have the option to purchase an overflow tray. These handy devices clip over the side of the spill pallet under the outlet tap or pipe to catch any drips and are large enough to house a pail or collection container if you need to decant small amounts of liquid. More importantly, they are designed so that if they were to become full, all overflowing liquid will feed back into the IBC bund to avoid further spillages. If, for instance, a tap fails or is accidentally left open, the contents of the IBC will accumulate in the bund and not all over the workspace floor. All IBC spill pallets are manufactured with forklift pockets for ease of movement and positioning.
